Chapter 7
The One With The Prep Work
Anthony couldnât believe it. He had been in the market that was in the center of town, but it was nothing like the market here. This town was much bigger, and it seemed that the money had come with it. The smells and colors, and the stalls! They were bigger than back home, full of produce, meats, and cheeses. There were a couple of stalls that had beautiful tapestries. He walked with his father, staying close behind him, but didnât bother and try to hide the fact he was looking around.
Once they were through the market, they continued to walk until they got to the very edge of the good part of town. There, in the sweet spot between the good part of town and the bad, was where they stopped for dinner.
It was an innocent enough looking cafe. In fact, it was rather large considering where it was in the city. It sat in the middle of a short block, sandwiched between a florist and a tailor shop. Once upon a time, it was probably the place to be. The furniture was high end, though it had been a while since they were new. The floor was clean, and the outside tables had well-laundered but older looking table clothes on them.
Anthony sat in the chair that his father pointed at and looked around. He smiled a little and watched the people move around. It was the perfect place to see everything happening in the dining area.
His father had chosen a table that was right at the corner of the inside half of the dining room and the half dozen tables outside on the sidewalk. There was a clear line of sight from the road to the kitchen. It was the perfect table to watch from.
Anthony glanced at his father, watching the way he looked around the room. After a couple of seconds of study, Anthony looked away from his face.
âTell me what you see, Boy.â
Anthony looked back at his father and shook his head slightly. âI donât understand, Poppa.â
His father looked at him and rested his arm on the tabletop. âTell me what you see.â He moved his head around to indicate the general surroundings.
Anthony looked around and took in the bustle of the restaurant. âIt looks like a cafe, Poppa.â
His father clicked her tongue a little and shook his head. âNoâno. Donât just brush things off like that. Anything can be made mundane by downgrading it to any everyday occurrence.â He tapped the table with his fingers to draw Anthonyâs attention back to him. âLook again. Really look this time. Donât wash over it with a large brush. The main painting is finished, Boy. Itâs time for the details. Pick up the small brush.â He held up his fingers and his hand made a small motion like he was painting.
